Magnolia Park Blog - February Review

February 28, 2018

Around the Club

The major work on the development of the 10 new beautiful hotel bedrooms continued throughout February and the end is finally in sight for this exciting project!  The luxurious Bridal Suite, featuring a four poster bed, a huge walk-in shower area and a free-standing bath, nears completion and we're looking forward to unveiling it in the coming weeks.  All the new rooms are now being decorated ahead of the furniture being installed and carpets put down.  In next month's blog we'll be sharing the photo's with you.

Over the past month we have also started the work on refurbishment of the Men's Changing Rooms and the main corridor near the Pro Shop, and the hard work is beginning to show as the walls and woodwork are repaired and painted.  As soon as this has been done the carpets will be put down and the trophy cabinets put back in place.  Next month's blog will have the photo's of the completed project and details of what's next on the list to be done!

Magnolia Park Members 2018 AGM, Friday 23rd February 2018

The Members AGM took take place on Friday 23rd February in The Magnolia Suite and was well attended by Members from all sections of the club.  The evening also saw the changing of the guard with our 2018 Captain's being "sworn into office".

The new Men's Captain is Richard Harris who takes over from Colin Cargill and Paul Lankester taking over from Nigel Witcombe for the Magnolia Park Seniors.  The 2018 Lady Captain is Jenny Wynd, who returns for a second consecutive year in the role.  We would like to wish all our incoming Captain's the very best for their forthcoming years, and also on behalf of all the members, staff and management offer our sincere thanks to the outgoing Captain's who have done so much throughout their year.

2017 Captains Final Fling, Saturday 24th February

Saturday 24th February saw the last official event for our 2017 Captains, Colin Cargill and Jenny Wynd, with the Final Fling.  A great, but chilly, day was had by the 50+ members and guests who took part in the day and enjoyed the hospitality of their Captain's for one last time.

As part of the day the outgoing Captain's presented a cheque for an incredible £8,898.91 to their Charity following the years fundraising efforts.  Lucy Walker, Community Fundraising Manager, from Helen & Douglas House came along to the club to receive the cheque and said "The Captains and Members at Magnolia Park have been doing some great fundraising for us over the last year, the amount they've raised could cover the costs of our entire care team for a week!".  A huge thanks to all the Members and visitors who have helped raise this money.

Captains' Drive In, Sunday 4th March

The World of Golf...

The European Tour

The final European Tour event of February was the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters held at the stunning Doha Golf Club with Eddie Pepperell holding off the challenge of Oliver Fisher to win his first European Tour title.

Pepperell entered the final day at Doha Golf Club level with his English compatriot at the top of the leaderboard and while he opened up a three-shot lead at the turn, an impressive fightback by Fisher meant the pair were separated by a just single stroke as they went up the par five last. With both men making par on the 18th it was Pepperrell taking a much deserved first victory!

The PGA Tour

Meanwhile, over the pond on the PGA Tour, Justin Thomas won the Honda Classic in Palm Beach on the PGA National Course, one of the very hardest on the Tour.  His win was following a playoff with fellow American Luke List after both players finished on 8 under.  The playoff was on the par 5 18th hole and after List made 5 it was Thomas who sunk his birdie putt to take his second win of the season.  The win also took the reigning FedExCup Champion to the top of this season's standings.  It was also his 7th win from his last 31 PGA Tour starts!

Further down the leaderboard, the impressive reigning European Tour Race to Dubai Champion finished in 4th place with a final total of 6 under to continue his impressive start to the 2018 season.  Other notable scores were Tiger Woods finishing T12 on Level and a disappointing T59 for Rory McIlroy ending up on 9 over for the tournament.
