Magnolia Park Blog - March Review

March 29, 2018

AROUND THE CLUB

The project of adding additional hotel rooms is now nearing completion with only the Bridal Suite requiring some finishing touches to be ready for our busy summer of weddings.  The newly completed rooms have all been decorated to an exceptional standard  and will be a great asset to the club to increase our capacity for golf breaks, wedding guests, conference delegates and our general hotel business.  Everyone involved has worked incredibly hard to get them finished off and the results are fantastic.

March also saw the completion of the refurbishment of the Men's Changing Rooms and the main corridor near the Pro Shop with only a few small finishing touches now required.  The new carpets have been laid throughout both areas and have certainly made a huge difference to the look and feel of the club as members and guests walk through.

MEMBER NEWS

New Head PGA Professional announcement

We are delighted to announce that Jon Darby will take up the position of Head PGA Professional here at Magnolia Park from the 1st May.  Here's what Jon had to say following his appointment.

"I am very excited to be joining the team and enhancing the golfing experience for all people to play and enjoy our wonderful club.

As a local from Thame I understand the history and heritage of the club and see this new start as a wonderful and exciting chapter in my career.  I am looking forward to meeting the members to progress the club forward especially in the key area of membership retention and recruitment.  My role will be managing all aspects of the golf operations this includes working closely with the management team to enhance all aspects of the golf operations at Magnolia Park.

A large part of the business will be to provide a coaching service that will include coaching groups of ladies and juniors and individual coaching.  We will be looking to employ a new PGA Assistant Professional that will support me in all areas of the golf operations.  I believe as a PGA professional we have a major role to play into getting more people into the game, retaining the golfers we have and enhancing the golfing experience whatever the standard age or background.

My coaching experience is second to none and I believe that the art of teaching and development of a golfer’s game is to keep it simple and not to confuse the pupil.  I use many modern day techniques including video analysis and use of many training aids to enhance the learning experience."

We look forward to Jon starting officially with us on 1st May and in the meantime if you have any questions or would like to contact Jon about lessons please email proshop@magnoliapark.co.uk

MARCH IN THE WORLD OF GOLF

THE PGA TOUR

At the beginning of March Phil Mickelson returned to the winners circle for the first time since winning the 2013 Open with victory at the WGC Mexico Championship defeating Justin Thomas on the first play-off hole.  A thrilling final day that included a hole-out eagle on the 18th from Justin Thomas and several changes at the top of the leaderboard was capped off with Mickelson ending the longest winless drought of his career.

The following weekend it was the turn of Paul Casey to end a long winless streak as he won the Valspar Championship by one shot from Patrick Reed after his final round 6 under 65 saw him finish on -10 for the tournament.  A certain Tiger Woods also finished up in T2 position on 9 under and further confirm his return to form after his lengthy layoff from the PGA Tour.  Notable European finishers were Sergio Garcia in 4th place and Justin Rose ending up T5.

Next up it was the "Kings" tournament in Orlando as the PGA Tour headed to Bayhill for the Arnold Palmer Invitational.  Maybe not such a long winless streak, but Rory McIlroy put in a great week's work to win this prestigious event by 3 shots from Bryson DeChambeau as he closed out with an eight under par 64 for 18 under total.  Justin Rose once again showed great form in Ryder Cup year as he finished in third place on 14 under.  Tiger Woods once again had a good tournament ending up T5 on 10 under.

From Florida the tour then moved to Austin, Texas for the second WGC event of the year, the Dell Technologies Match Play event.  With a stellar field it was Bubba Watson who triumphed and in doing so became only the fifth player to win multiple World Golf Championships and multiple Majors.  In the final he completely overpowered fellow American Kevin Kisner 7 & 6 to lift the trophy!  In the 3rd place playoff Swedish player Alex Noren saw off Justin Thomas 5 & 3.

Next tournament on the PGA Tour is the Houston Open which starts on 29th March and is the last chance for some players to gain entry into the year's first Major, The Masters, which tee's off on 5th April.

THE LPGA TOUR

Michelle Wie overcame her putting demons of last year to hole an outrageous 36-foot putt on the 18th green to win her first LPGA title in 4 years, and another long winless streak was over!  Posting a 7-under 65 on Sunday at the HSBC Women's World Championship in Singapore, Wie set the tournament target at 17-under-par - on the course where she four-putted herself out of contention in 2017. Fellow American and overnight leader Nelly Korda missed a nine-foot birdie and the chance to force a playoff with Wie.

THE EUROPEAN TOUR

The month of March was relatively quiet for the European Tour regulars due to the World Golf Championship events but over the first weekend of the month the Tour headed to South Africa and the Pretoria Country Club in Waterkloof for the Tschwane Open.  South African, and Pretoria CC Member, George Coetzee triumphed in this event for the second time and in turn picked up his 4th European Tour win.  Coetzee edged out Englishman Sam Horsfield by 2 shots to win on 18 under.

March's other European Tour event was the HERO Indian Open at the DLF Golf and Country Club in New Delhi.  Matt Wallace won his second European Tour title following a dramatic play-off victory over Andrew 'Beef' Johnston.  Wallace has started the final day with a share of the lead and a closing 68 got him to 11 under, a total matched by compatriot Johnston after his final round of 66.  Wallace hit a huge drive down the 18th on the first extra hole and with Johnston laying up and seeing his birdie putt agonisingly lip out, the 27 year old had two putts for the title after hitting a brilliant second onto the putting surface.  He rolled his first up to the side of the hole and tapped home to seal a second victory in 32 tournaments.

Next on the schedule for many European Tour players is the Masters, whilst those not qualifying for the seasons opening Major will have to wait until The Open de España in Madrid which starts on 12th April.

AND FINALLY....

As you know we host many meetings and conferences throughout the year in our function rooms.  Avansa are one of our most loyal and regular conference clients as they host 6 or 7 two and half day sales conferences every year since their first visit in early 2016.  Following their most recent event in March we received the following fantastic review from Managing Director Jenny Arnott on TripAdvisor...

Excellent Hotel with Exceptional Staff

We have been using the Best Western Magnolia Park Hotel for a couple of years to hold regular sales conferences.  The rooms are always spotlessly clean, the staff are so helpful with a 'nothing is too much trouble' attitude.  The food is amazing and on testing out their new menu the past few days we can give it 10/10.  Large car park and amazing views over the golf course there is nothing I can fault with this hotel.  An added bonus for the girls in our company is that Bicester Shopping Outlet Village is only 10 minutes drive from the hotel where you may find a bargain or two!  Ben Gaignierre who is General Manager, Matt Davies - Sales and Marketing Manager, Richard who manages the bar along with Daniel in the restaurant all deserve a special mention.
