Magnolia Park Blog - April Review

The Bridal Suite

It is with great pride that we officially opened our stunning new Bridal Suite in April at our annual Wedding Fair. The luxurious Suite (pictured below) features a large four-poster bed with in-room bath, large flat screen ceiling mounted television and a stunning wet room.

Our sincere thanks go to Beacon Purchasing who assisted us through the process of design and supply of the furniture, fitting and equipment and have really contributed to a Suite we are all extremely proud of. Thanks also to Multipanel for the bathroom flooring and glass wall panels and also to Cavalier Carpets for the carpets, not only in the Bridal Suite, but also throughout the new hotel rooms, the changing rooms and the corridors.

The Magnolia Park Wedding Fair, Sunday 8th April

Along with our regular supplier, Deans Chair Covers, we hosted our annual Wedding Fair on Sunday 8th April and welcomed Brides and Grooms from across the region and beyond. They were greeted with a glass of Prosecco and canapes on arrival before heading into the Magnolia Suite to meet with around 15 local wedding suppliers who were exhibiting everything from wedding cakes to wedding dresses and photo booths to roulette wheels. The fair was a great success with a number of new weddings booked as a result of the day as guests were able to view our venue dressed for a wedding including the Ryder Cup Room set up for a civil ceremony and reduced wedding breakfast set up in the Magnolia Suite.

The Magnolia Park Golf Society Organisers Day, Friday 27th April

On Friday 27th April we hosted our third annual Golf Society Organisers Day and whilst the weather was cold and wet it didn't stop the 16 teams enjoying their day with us. The predicted heavy rain all day never materialised and following tea, coffee and bacon rolls, the teams headed out to their start tees ahead of the shotgun start at 10:00am. Last year's Champion Society, GWR Trains Golf Society, were with us again to defend their title in the Team Stableford competition along with teams from around the region.

The team event was a tightly fought contest with some good scores coming in. We also added an extra twist to the day with two secret holes counting for double points, which were only revealed during the prize presentation. Following the delicious meal enjoyed by all in the Magnolia Suite the prizes were handed out to the winners, and losers!

In third place with a total score of 86 points, including the double point holes, were the team from The Jolly Sportsmen Golf Society. Runners-up were last years Champions, GWR Trains Golf Society with 88 points. The 2018 winners were the team from 1 Regiment RLC Golf Society who scored an impressive 97 points! We also had a special prize for the team who battled all day long to score 63 points and finish in last place! Picking up a brewery tour of the Wychwood Brewery to drown their sorrows, kindly donated by Marstons Brewery, were the team from BOFS Golf Society!

I would like to thank all the teams who took part in this fantastic event as well as Marstons Brewery and Ping for their continued support.

Captains Drive-In, Sunday 1st April

The annual Captains Drive-In event finally took place on Sunday 1st April following the cancellation due to snow back in March. The day, whilst cold and damp, was a tremendous occasion and our thanks go to the 17 teams who took part plus the numerous additional members and guests who came along afterwards for the food and Captains Charity announcement.

The teams and guests enjoyed breakfast on arrival in the bar before heading out to the first tee for the ceremonial tee shots. Our Club President, Martin Connelly, welcomed the gathered onlookers before one by one the Captain's took their place in the limelight. A very lighthearted crowd certainly enjoyed the drive from new Mens Captain Richard Harris after his golf ball was replaced by an exploding version!

Following the conclusion of the golf the players then enjoyed a welcome drink and food back in the bar before the Captains announced their chosen charity, Thomley, along with news of the resurrection of the Summer Ball which was well received by all the guests.

Paul also announced that the Seniors Section will be launching a newsletter this year titled 'Senior Moments' on the Members section of the Magnolia Park website.

Ladies and Gentlemen, please welcome our new Captains for 2018...

From left to right Paul Lankaster (Seniors Captain), Jenny Wynd (Ladies Captain) and Richard Harris (Men's Captain). Everyone at Magnolia Park wishes all three of them a fantastic year as Captains.

The first PGA Tour event of the month was the Houston Open in Texas and carrrying on from last month's winless streaks ending it was another one with England's IAN POULTER returning to the winners circle. After a dramatic final day and a play-off victory over Beau Hossler, Poulter also gained the final spot at The Masters, having been told the week before, incorrectly, that he was in. The victory also came after Poulter had decided to start using the putter he famously used at the 2012 Ryder Cup aka 'The Miracle of Medinah'!

The following weekend was the much anticipated Masters tournament with many of the top players in the world coming into top form leading up to the first Major of 2018. After 4 days of thrilling golf the 27 year old PATRICK REED became the Masters Champion and collected the coveted Green Jacket after a 1 shot victory over Rickie Fowler. The round of the tournament had to be from Jordan Spieth who came from nowhere to shoot 8 under 64 and finish third on the final day and was briefly on the verge of the greatest comeback in Masters history. The European contingent made a good showing on the final leaderboard with Spain's Jon Rahm finishing 4th on 11 under and Rory McIlroy a further two shots back in T5 on 9 under.

April also saw Japan's SATOSHI KODAIRA win the RBC Heritage in South Carolina after a play-off victory against Kim Si-woo from South Korea, with Ian Poulter, again, showing good form having led the tournament going into the final day.

Following on was the Valero Texas Open with ANDREW LANDRY picking up his first win in 32 starts on the Tour in San Antonio by two shots over Sean O'Hair and Trey Mullinax.

The final event of April on the Tour was the Zurich Classic of New Orleans which is a pairs team event and BILLY HORSCHEL and SCOTT PIERCY ran out the winners of this unique event. England's Tommy Fleetwood and Chris Paisley finished tied fourth.

The first weekend of April also saw the year's first LPGA Major and Sweden's PERNILLA LINDBERG won the ANA Inspiration, at Mission Hills Country Club in California after defeating Inbee Park following 8 play-off holes with a 30 foot birdie on the 10th to secure the title.

The month of April started relatively quietly for the European Tour due to the Masters, however, JON RAHM continued his rich vein of form following on from Augusta with a home victory at the Open de Espana in Madrid. He became the sixth Spanish player to win the event after he carded a closing 67 to hold off compatriot Nacho Elvira and overnight leader Paul Dunne to win.

The following week saw the European Tour back in Morocco for the Hassan Trophy where Ryder Cup hopeful ALEXANDER LEVY boosted his chances with victory. The world number 66 finished on eight under to win by 1 shot from overnight leader Alvaro Quiros and in doing so secure his fifth European Tour title.

The final event on the April schedule was the Volvo China Open, again with a stellar European field out in force in Beijing. Sweden's ALEXANDER BJORK prevailed and captured his first European Tour title with a one shot victory over Spain's Adrian Otaegui. Matt Wallace and fellow Englishman Jordan Smith tied for third place on 16 under.

Throughout 2018 we have some fantastic events lined up for Members and Non-Members to enjoy.
