On the Course in February
Welcome to the latest edition of our Course Blog which covers February to keep you updated on the general condition of the golf course plus details of all the work Head Green Keeper, Shaun Kench, and his team have been doing.
February was a real mix of weather starting off with freezing mornings and frost, minimal rainfall throughout the month and ending with warm days with temperatures hitting highs of 19 degrees which is incredible for the time of year. Even more so is the fact that this time last year we had 6" of snow on the course.
Following on from last month's blog we have continued our bunker renovation works with concentration on the large bunker on the 1st greenside and 3rd fairway which has now been redesigned and filled in. The large amount of sand recovered from this has been recycled and used throughout the golf course most notably in the greenside bunker on the 12th hole which has now been completely filled in following the recent work.
As we look to improve our practice facilities at Magnolia Park we have re-cut the driving range to a new design, starting with the tee areas. We have created a tee box solely for Head Professional Jon Darby to use for his coaching and the old tee area has been converted to a short game tee with a target zone to the old range green. Further down the range we have cut a new grass tee area and mats will be positioned on the back area of the raised tee. A rope will be installed on this new grass tee and players are encouraged to use the area within this. During March we will be relocating and positioning the distance marker boards to complete the work.
NOTE: We would request that if possible ALL players refrain from using driver from this tee until further notice.
February also saw the continuation of our verti-cutting programme which we started at the end of January. This process will thin the thatch and reduce mossy areas on the greens and will continue throughout March until the renovation work starts week commencing Monday 25th March.
AROUND THE CLUBHOUSE & HOTEL
The main project for Estate Gardener, Jonny, in February has been continuing to clear and tidy the land and bank between the 16th and 18th fairways. This 2 month project is nearly complete now and will give players a much better view of the golf course whilst also allowing more light penetration to produce a better playing surface. Jonny has also spent some time during the month clearing, tidying and jet washing the patio terrace off the 18th green in readiness for a very busy season ahead, and hopefully the better weather for all our guests and members to enjoy.
Shaun and the Green Keeper Team would request that all on course directions, signage and line markings are all adhered to until further notice when playing. These are all visible and are in place to help keep the course in a presentable and enjoyable condition for all golfers. It is also requested that due to the reduced light in the mornings that the Green Keepers are given right of way at all times, and can all golfers please wait to be called up before playing shots.
